The disease mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes. Leprosy is known to occur at all ages ranging from early infancy to very old age.
Leprosy, or Hansen disease, is a disease of the skin and nerves. In advanced cases, the disease disfigures the body, or ruins its normal appearance. Leprosy has frightened people since ancient times. Those suffering from the disease used to be called lepers. They often were separated from the rest of society.
