Warning: Full spoilers for The Punisher Season 2, Episode 2 below. If you need a refresher on where we left off, check out our review of the Season 2 premiere.

I'll say this much for The Punisher Season 2 so far - it seems more willing to build and maintain story momentum than its predecessor. Whereas Season 1 seemed willing to go multiple episodes without a real action scene, Frank has already racked up a respectable body count in the span of two episodes. The problem we're seeing right now, however, is that the show isn't doing a great job of making his new foes feel like anything more than disposable cannon fodder.

We do get some more insight into the nature of this mysterious cult of assassins Frank has stumbled his way into angering. They're clearly some sort of right-wing Christian fundamentalist group with a penchant for murder but a distaste for naughty language. But is that really enough? Where's the emotional throughline here? Last season, Frank's mission was all about exacting vengeance on the people who murdered his family and left him for dead. This is just a group of weirdos who happen to be trying to kill him. They serve their purpose in terms of illustrating how eager Frank is to return to the vigilante lifestyle, but that's about it.

On the plus side, this episode had a heavy No Country for Old Men vibe that worked in its favor. There's the whole notion of a battle-hardened anti-hero hiding out in remote hotels and trying to stay one step ahead of a relentless enemy. The similarities got pretty specific, what with the scene of Amy having to perform impromptu bathroom surgery on Frank and Frank later using the hotel layout to outsmart his pursuers. We've seen what Frank is capable of when he has a full arsenal of weapons and Micro backing him up. It's a fun change of pace seeing him forced to fight smart and use his minimal resources to their fullest.

This episode also gave us a much better look at the current status quo for both SAC Madani and Billy Russo. This whole subplot does still feel a little too divorced from the main Frank storyline. So far, only that one, brief phone call between Frank and Madani really generates any connective tissue between the two. No doubt the two halves will converge at some point, but there's no telling when that might be.

But on its own merits, this New York storyline is shaping up nicely. Dinah's struggle to move past her traumatic relationship with Billy gives this season an emotional heft that's mostly lacking in the Frank narrative. She's clearly suffering some PTSD of her own. And can you blame her, given how easily Billy seems to be succeeding in avoiding the legal consequences of his crimes? It'll be interesting to see just how low she sinks over the course of the season before her warnings about Billy are inevitably justified.

At the same time, it's not entirely clear that Billy is faking his memory loss. There's a great deal of ambiguity surrounding the character right now. Ben Barnes has a much more difficult task this season when it comes to playing this character, particularly given that he can't even rely on his face for his performance. So far, he's doing a terrific job of portraying this physically and mentally tormented character.

The Punisher's second season continues to shape up well at this early stage, even if there are concerns about some of the new characters being introduced. Frank's obnoxious new sidekick Amy definitely needs some work. On the plus side, the rural hotel shootout and the increased emphasis on Billy Russo ensure this episode is never lacking in intensi...

  4. Jan 21, 2019 · In contrast, Rachel’s go-to move is flight. Which makes sense since she’s up against multiple killers and is so obviously not one. However, despite my willingness to entertain the notion that Rachel is in over her head, she is far from innocent. Her attempts to play the poor defenseless bystander/ college student/ minor notwithstanding.
