The Battle of Matewan (also known as the Matewan Massacre) was a shootout in the town of Matewan in Mingo County and the Pocahontas Coalfield mining district, in southern West Virginia. It occurred on May 19, 1920 between local coal miners and their allies and the Baldwin–Felts Detective Agency .

Matewan Massacre. The coal town of Matewan in southern West Virginia's Mingo County was the site of a bloody conflict that resulted in the deaths of local lawmen and Baldwin Felts Detectives. Sid Hatfield was the Sheriff of Matewan, West Virginia from 1919 until his death in 1921.
This gunfight became known as the Matewan Massacre, and its symbolic significance was enormous for the miners. The seemingly invincible detective agency Baldwin–Felts had been beaten.

They were prevented from doing so by the local police chief and the local mayor, who commenced a gunfight that ended up working not in the interest of the Baldwin-Felts agents.
