Mar 30, 2024 · The mission and the surrounding area were named for the Catholic saint Didacus of Alcalá, a Spaniard more commonly known as San Diego. The mission was the site of the first Christian burial in Alta California. The original mission burned in 1775 during an uprising by local natives.
It is an active church and a popular tourist site. San Diego de Alcalá was the first Spanish mission founded in California. The Spanish government was concerned about other European powers intruding into the Spanish territory of Alta California (what is now California).
