North Rhine-Westphalia was established by the British military administration's "Operation Marriage" on 23 August 1946. [1] Originally, it consisted of Westphalia and the northern parts of the Rhine Province, both formerly part of Prussia. The planimetrically determined centre of North Rhine-Westphalia is located in the south of Dortmund- Aplerbeck in the Aplerbecker Mark (51° 28' N, 7° 33' Ö).
