When the Cherokees were forced to leave their homes in the East during 1838-39, Murrell chose to move with his wife's family to the new Nation in the west. In Park Hill, he established a plantation and about 1845, built a large frame home similar to those he remembered in Virginia.
The nearly 13,000 Cherokees who removed to the west between 1835 and 1839 were called “Eastern” or “Emigrant” Cherokees. After 1838 they merged with the “Old Settlers” to form the Cherokee Nation West. Perhaps 1,500–2,000 Cherokees remained behind and became known as “The Eastern Band.”.
