The E38 was the first 7 Series to offer diesel engines, with inline 6 and V8 options. The variants for the E38 were the 725tds , 728i , 730i , 735i , 740i , and the V12 powered 750i . Long wheelbase variants such as the 740iL and 750iL were also offered, including the extra-long wheelbase L7 .
Power came from a selection of straight-six, V8 and V12 engines. Inside it was pure luxury… and packed with kit (as you’d expect from a car in this price bracket). Safety features included traction control, self-levelling xenon headlights, and side airbags.
Apr 3, 2023 · Every engine in the E38 is an utter joy, and while the 2.8i isn’t going to set the world on fire, it’s not exactly slow, either. Plus, driven sensibly, it’s great on fuel, too. Here in the UK, we only got petrol versions, though BMW did offer straight-six and V8 diesel version in other markets.
