    • Simple Minds. It’s been quite a ride for Simple Minds. Initially rising from the ashes of frontman Jim Kerr’s punk outfit, Johnny And The Self-Abusers, the group remained an (albeit large) cult concern for their first five years, releasing widely hailed albums such as Empires And Dance, Sons And Fascination/Sister Feelings Call, with the acclaim then translating into sales from 1982’s New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) onwards.
    • Primal Scream. Bobby Gillespie was involved in several of Scottish rock’s most important skirmishes during the 80s and 90s. Originally doing a stint with underrated Factory Records outfit The Wake, he then played drums with the classic early line-up of The Jesus And Mary Chain, responsible for 1985’s Psychocandy album.
    • Rod Stewart. The former Faces frontman and distinguished solo star is technically Anglo-Scottish, because he was born in Highgate, in north London, and grew up in The Big Smoke.
    • The Proclaimers. Synonymous with the Edinburgh suburb of Leith, bespectacled singer-songwriter brothers Craig and Charlie Reid are children of punk, with their worldview initially set by their mutual love of The Clash, Sex Pistols and The Jam.
    • Average White Band. We mean this in the nicest possible way, but it has to be said that the Average White Band never sounded very Scottish. Funky as hell, they could have been led by James Brown or opened for Earth, Wind & Fire.
    • The Proclaimers. Craig and Charlie Reid have the finest voices in Scotland. Identical twins that are able to harmonise as only twins can, they're probably best known for I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) but their back catalogue is well worth investigating.
    • Belle and Sebastian. Founded by Stuart Murdoch, this bunch of fey popsters merged '80s indie with Nick Drake, and - on their early albums in particular - made something utterly magic out of them.
    • Teenage Fanclub. A fuzzy indie dream that remain one of the most underappreciated groups, well, ever, Teenage Fanclub will be discovered by future generations who will mock us for not rising them up to megastar status.

    • The Proclaimers. Hailing from the tiny village of Auchtermuchty in Fife, identical twins Charlie and Craig Reid formed The Proclaimers in 1983. This iconic duo has since gone on to release 12 studio albums, all characterised by their unmistakable Scottish accent.
    • Lewis Capaldi. Born in Bathgate, just outside Edinburgh, Lewis Capaldi’s emotional ballads, combined with his very Scottish sense of humour, have seen him become a global superstar across social media and the music charts.
    • Annie Lennox. Born on Christmas Day in Aberdeen, Annie Lennox is one of Scotland’s best-known musicians. As one half of Eurythmics, Annie ruled the 80’s with hits like ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ before embarking on a solo career that has seen her win Grammys, Golden Globes, and even an Oscar for her musical work.
    • AC/DC. Technically AC/DC are an Australian creation, but Scotland had a massive part to play in the formation of one of rock and roll’s greatest bands. AC/DC were formed by Glasgow-born brothers, Angus and Malcolm Young, with another Scotsman – lead singer Bon Scott – performing with the band until his death in 1980.
