It is important to share with students the importance of September 11, 2001; how it impacted individuals and the nation; and why it was a pivotal moment in U.S. history.
- Do a Good Deed for 9/11 Day. Encourage students to take part in the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Start by brainstorming ways for students to get involved through volunteering, donating to a charity, or simply by being kind to others.
- Read about September 11. Most adults remember clearly the morning of September 11, 2001. We remember where we were, what we were doing, how we felt. But students today are too young to remember the attacks.
- Be a Researcher. Explain to students that scientists work hard not only to research answers, but also to think of the questions themselves. Have students complete the first two columns of a K-W-L Chart, briefly describing “What I Know” about 9/11 in the first column, and “What I Want to Know” about 9/11 in the second column.
- Study a Photo. Show a photo from 9/11 or its aftermath to the class, or allow students to choose a photo. Provide questions for analysis: What is happening in the photo?
