I read that when writer Sera Gamble took over as showrunner during Seasons 6 and 7, not only did her writing suffer, but she was the one who fired Misha Collins, who was gone for a good chunk of Season 7 until he was hired back.

He stepped aside, making room for someone else to tell stories in this universe, allowing him to focus on other projects as well. Kripke also cited the passion of Sera Gamble, who succeeded him as showrunner.
Sera Gamble was a writer and executive story editor for Supernatural. Beginning with season three, she also became a producer with a promotion to supervising in season four and executive producer in season five. In season six and seven, she took over as showrunner following Kripke's departure.
