Jul 19, 2020 · 50 years ago, the SS Great Britain was saved. The rescue and 8,000-mile homecoming journey from the Falkland Islands to Bristol was the longest salvage tow ever undertaken, and the largest hull salvaged using a submersible pontoon.

SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship that was advanced for her time. She was the largest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1853. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–1859), for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York City.
The SS Great Britain Museum details the story of this fascinating ship, including why she was such an architectural marvel (it was the fastest and largest ship in the world when it was built!), her years as a migrant clipper and how she turned into a cargo ship.
Dominating Bristol’s historic waterfront, within Brunel’s original Dock Office, the SS Great Britain is a wonderful and important museum. The £7.2m attraction is the world’s most significant Brunel collection.
The Museum is recognized as a world leader in the preservation of perishable artifacts and is a model for other institutions dealing with objects of trauma. The Museum’s Collections are permanently housed at the David and Fela Shapell Family Collections, Conservation and Research Center.
