Denominato in origine stadio del Sole nel 1959, fu ribattezzato stadio San Paolo nel 1963. Il 4 dicembre 2020 il Comune di Napoli ha intitolato lo stadio all'ex capitano del Napoli, Diego Armando Maradona, deceduto il precedente 25 novembre.
