When a Supreme Court judge commits suicide and his secretary is found murdered, all fingers point to Carl Anderson, a homeless veteran who's deaf and mute. But when public defender Kathleen Riley is assigned to his case, she begins to believe that Anderson may actually be innocent.
Suspect, released in October 1987, is often overlooked in a pile of Cher pictures with flashier parts, which is unfortunate because I believe Kathleen Riley is a very precise and unusual character in a smart Cher film, smart from its locations and themes to its deft supporting performances.
Set in Washington DC, Suspect centers on three disparate characters. Carl Wayne Anderson is a homeless, deaf-mute Vietnam veteran accused of murdering Elizabeth Quinn, a file clerk at the Justice Department. Kathleen Riley is the beleaguered Federal Public Defender assigned to represent Anderson.
