Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century.

Prints & Drawings. Gainsborough was a compulsive and experimental draughtsman. Most of the drawings by Gainsborough in the collection are imagined landscapes, quickly rendered in graphite, chalk and ink washes, the sort that Gainsborough produced hundreds of throughout his career.
A pupil of the French illustrator and draftsman Hubert Gravelot, Gainsborough was intimately involved with avant-garde rococo art and design, and seems to have assisted Francis Hayman on his genre paintings for the decoration of Vauxhall Gardens.
