  3. Aug 13, 2018 · From its snarling, wide-eyed British inception in the late 70s, we've witnessed the advent of everything from peace punk to punk pathetique, street punk, Taqwacore and beyond. But the last five years have seen a particular renaissance in British punk, with a new wave of artists emerging from the Isles to usher the genre forward.

    • Sex Pistols. From the moment they gatecrashed their first gigs at London art colleges in late 1975, lying that they were the opening act, to their 1978 implosion in San Francisco following the biggest gig of their career, the Sex Pistols created a rupture in rock.
    • The Clash. “And we don’t care!” the Pistols screamed on “Pretty Vacant.” The Clash cared deeply. The Pistols acted as a wrecking machine, then walked away, not one shit given.
    • The Damned. The Damned are traditionally seen as the Number Three London Punk Band. But they beat the Pistols and Clash and everyone else at everything: First punk single (“New Rose”), first punk album (Damned Damned Damned) and first to tour the States.
    • Siouxsie And The Banshees. They began as a joke, created out of original Pistols followers the Bromley Contingent when McLaren needed bands to round out the two-night 100 Club Punk Festival in September 1976.
    • The Adicts. The Adicts are probably most known for their image which is similar to that of the main characters in the cult classic movie “A Clockwork Orange.
    • The Adverts. The Adverts are most famous for their hit single “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes” which hit #18 in the U.K. The band was relatively short-lived starting in 1976 and ending in 1979.
    • Angelic Upstarts. The band started in 1977 and has been associated with the oi punk movement along with anti-fascist messages in their lyrics, they are also one of the bands that represented the working class in England and have been part of the skinhead punk movement.
    • Anti-Nowhere League. Anti-Nowhere League started in 1980 and is probably most well-known for their song “So What” which was featured by Metallica on their Garage Inc.
