Clarence E. Heller established the foundation in 1982 to support nonprofit initiatives consistent with the broad philanthropic purposes he pursued during his lifetime. The original trustees of the foundation were Clarence Heller, his brother Alfred Heller, and his sister Elizabeth H. Mandell.
Given in memory of Walter Heller, this award serves to provide a concrete form of recognition to those graduate students who are getting off to the best start on their research careers. The fund is established in the UC San Diego Foundation, and is administered by the Department of Economics Chair.
