Joining the endless cavalcade of shows about commitment-phobic thirtysomethings living in the big city, FOX's Weird Loners isn't anything special. Rather, it feels like a half-hearted attempt to fill The Mindy Project's now-vacant slot with anything other than reruns. And unlike its spring comedy counterpart The Last Man on Earth (also on FOX), Weird Loners is a far cry from appointment television. While it's not awful by any stretch, it's also not awfully funny.

    7 Things to Watch This Week (3/30/15 - 4/5/15)

The series opens with intros for the four main characters: Stosh Lewandoski (Happy Endings' Zachary Knighton), a pompous womanizer who just got fired for... er, womanizing; Caryn Goldfarb (How I Met Your Mother's Becki Newton), a hopeless romantic who refuses to settle down with a stable but boring doctor named Howard; Zara Sandhu (newcomer Meera Rohit Kumbhani), a starving artist who just moved out on her boyfriend; and Eric Lewandoski (Mr. Sunshine's Nate Torrence), Stosh's estranged, socially awkward cousin who still lives with his dad -- at least he did live with his dad until pops kicked the bucket while trading jabs with Eric over a Mets game.

As stale as it is, Weird Loners has a pretty good setup that finds Stosh crashing at Eric's place, and Zara moving in with Caryn. While these characters are more or less perfect strangers, the meetings come at a good clip, and the relationships quickly -- if predictably -- fall into place. To the show's credit, the four stars play pretty well off each other. Knighton and Torrence's characters have a great clashing of personalities, while Kumbhani's Zara stands out as a magnetic free spirit. Unfortunately, the obvious pairing of Stosh and Caryn doesn't really work, and it immediately pigeonholes the group into a stale dynamic.

FOX's new comedy Weird Loners refurbishes a timeworn premise and stock characters to create an amusing, if forgettable, half hour of television. 4. Mar 30, 2015 · The pilot episode is fast-paced and provides the necessary introduction and background on the characters. The opening sequence with narration where we first meet the characters was well done. Caryn goes on a singles cruise ship and has dinner with Marty.

  5. Mar 31, 2015 · Episode 1 spends its first few minutes with a “cold opening” that introduces us to each of the four main characters, flashing back to fourth-grade classroom photos with the narrator explaining ...

  6. Mar 21, 2023 · Weird Loners is one of those FOX comedies that feels dead on arrival, destined to live out a fate like many comedies before it (Enlisted, Ben & Kate, The Goodwin Games… the list goes on and on).
