Wermelskirchen is the birthplace of Carl Leverkus, founder of a German chemical and pharmaceutical company in Leverkusen, which was later overtaken by Bayer and run by Carl Duisberg. Film director and writer Uwe Boll, director of Rampage and Assault on Wall Street was born here. Thomas Kleine, German footballer, was born in Wermelskirchen in 1977.
