Of Jack Kirby & Stan Lee's Silver Age Marvel creations, the X-Men had the bumpiest start. Stuck with a team dynamic that never fully gelled and a concept never explored to its fullest potential, the team's eponymous book was canceled in 1970. Five years later, writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum revived the team with "Giant-Size X-Men" by intro...

The Bronze Age brought not just new beginnings, but endings as well. This two-part tale, the last Superman tale before the DC Universe reboot, was the finale to the Silver & Bronze Age's Man of Steel, positing a potential end to the hero and his supporting cast. Scripted by Alan Moore and drawn by Curt Swan (ranked as the definitive Superman artist...

After the ending of the 1966 Batman television series, the dynamic duo of writer Dennis O'Neil & artist Neal Adams took charge of the Caped Crusader's creative direction. Telling tales across both Batman and Detective Comics, the pair moved away from the camp of the Silver Age towards pulp; the stories were darker (thematically and aesthetically) a...

O'Neil & Adams' revolutionary work at DC didn't stop with Batman. For 11 issues, they took charge of Green Lantern too, introducing Green Arrowas Hal's partner and political foil (with the book's title changed to reflect this new pairing). O'Neil was never a writer afraid of being political, so he had the two face more down-to-earth terrors like bi...

One of the greatest tragedies of comics: the King never completed his magnum opus. Jack Kirby had conceived the Fourth World while still at Marvel, his idea being that Thor & his supporting cast would perish in Ragnarök, paving the way for New Gods to replace the Asgardians. Marvel had no desire to take Thor off the table, so the project went nowhe...

Alan Moore's most famous deconstruction of the superhero genre remains Watchmen, but the "original writer" did it first with Marvelman (reprinted as Miracleman due to legal complications). The original Marvelman comic was a UK-rebrand of Captain Marvel (now known as Shazam)canceled in 1963, Moore picked up near 20 years later in 1982. His run featu...

The most important Bronze Age tale was its closing chapter. The 12-part crossover featured the destruction of DC's multiverse and the merging of disparate continuities into one. Since the Multiverse concept was introduced in Flash #123, it had been the central underpinning of DC's continuity, linking the Golden and Silver Ages. Its destruction also...
