Heat can make doors and frames expand and set. You can lock the door but it might not be closed. Sliding door locks might not be engaged, or the lock is banged up enough to need a specific position to lock (I work in a school, and given how abuse doors get, each door has a personality that needs appeasing).
Take a Kwikset tool or a small slotted screwdriver and put it into the hollow end of the black plastic spindle/tailpiece, and you should be able to rotate it back & forth to the locked/unlocked positions. At the risk of sounding like a snob, buy a cheap lock, get cheap quality.

Install both knobs by sliding the spindle through the slot in the latch. Align the two long screws from the inside knob into the cylinders on the exterior door knob and tighten the screws. Remove the two screws holding the strike plate in place on the door jamb and install the new one in the same position.
