Dec 21, 2020 · This article explains the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model and the 7 layers of networking, in plain English. The OSI model is a conceptual framework that is used to describe how a network functions. In plain English, the OSI model helped standardize the way computer systems send information to each other.
- Layer 1: Physical. The Physical layer is the foundation of computer networks. It deals with the actual hardware and physical aspects that enable data to move from one device to another.
- Layer 2: Data Link. The Data Link layer is the Ethernet protocol. Devices on an Ethernet network use what’s known as a MAC address, sometimes referred to as an Ethernet address.
- Layer 3: Network. The Network layer serves as the virtual traffic manager of a network. Its primary function is to determine the most efficient path for data to travel from its source to its destination.
- Layer 4: Transport. This layer oversees the process of breaking data into manageable pieces and ensuring they arrive intact. It’s like shipping a large package in smaller, well-protected boxes.
Dec 8, 2023 · Each of its seven layers has a distinct role, ensuring efficient data transfer from one device to another. The OSI model is essential for understanding how data is transmitted in a network and is also a practical guide for network protocol design and problem solving.
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a reference tool for understanding data communications between any two networked systems. It divides the communications processes into seven layers.

- The Physical Layer. The lowest layer is responsible for transmitting data to another device using some type of physical medium. It handles characteristics of the physical connection between nodes.
- The Data Link Layer. The data link layer is responsible for transferring data between two nodes that are either directly connected or lie within the same network.
- The Network Layer. The network layer lies at the heart of the OSI network stack. It is responsible for addressing packets and routing them across the internet.
- The Transport Layer. The transport layer works in conjunction with the network layer to coordinate data transfer between the host and the destination.
Mar 18, 2024 · The OSI model consists of 7 layers: Application Layer, Presentation Layer, Session Layer, Transport Layer, Network Layer, Datalink Layer, Physical Layer. Each of these layers has a different role to play, and they work collaboratively to transmit the data from one networking device to another.
