Semiconductor diode based upon the p–n junction
- A p–n diode is a type of semiconductor diode based upon the p–n junction. The diode conducts current in only one direction, and it is made by joining a p -type semiconducting layer to an n -type semiconducting layer.

A p–n diode is a type of semiconductor diode based upon the p–n junction. The diode conducts current in only one direction, and it is made by joining a p -type semiconducting layer to an n -type semiconducting layer.
A p–n junction diode allows charge carriers to flow in one direction, but not in the opposite direction; negative charge carriers (electrons) can easily flow through the junction from n to p but not from p to n, and the reverse is true for positive charge carriers (holes).
By adding connections to each end of the P-type and the N-type materials we can produce a two terminal device called a PN Junction Diode which can be biased by an external voltage to either block or allow the flow of current through it.
One of the crucial keys to solid state electronics is the nature of the P-N junction. When p-type and n-type materials are placed in contact with each other, the junction behaves very differently than either type of material alone.
Jun 1, 2020 · What is pn junction diode? When a single piece of semiconductor material (either Si or Ge) whose one portion is doped with an n-type impurity and the other portion is doped with p-type impurity behave as a PN junction. A PN junction having metallic contact at its end is known as the PN junction diode. PN junction diode diagram
May 22, 2022 · The schematic symbol for a basic switching or rectifying diode is shown in Figure \(\PageIndex{7}\). This is the ANSI standard which predominates in North America. The P material is the anode while the N material is the cathode 1. As a general rule for semiconductor schematic symbols, arrows point toward N material.
