On February 13, 1960, Florida A&M students and other members of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) held the first of what would turn into a year-long campaign of sit-ins to protest discrimination at department store lunch counters throughout downtown Tallahassee.

In response, eight Florida A&M and high school students sat-in at the local Woolworth counter for 2.5 hours on February 13, 1960. No one was arrested. A week later on Saturday, February 20, a group of 11 students returned to the lunch counter in Tallahassee.
Local store owners refused to allow African Americans to sit and eat at their lunch counters. In February 1960, Tallahassee activists began holding peaceful “sit ins" at Woolworth’s and McCrory's. They risked their safety to expose the immorality of racial discrimination.
