Belfast ( BEL-fahst, elsewhere from Irish: Béal Feirste meaning 'mouth of the sand-bank ford') is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast. It is the 12th-largest city in the United Kingdom and the second-largest on the island of Ireland.
- Titanic. One of the most famous ships in history was built right here in Belfast. Although the reason for its fame is undeniably terrible, this city is still proud to have engineered such a massive and impressive ship.
- Peace Wall. Northern Ireland has experienced its fair share of tragedy, including “The Troubles” that lasted nearly 30 years. This time of turmoil and violence, which started in the 1960s and ran all the way until 1998, divided the country.
- Belfast Castle. Another symbol of Belfast history is the iconic Belfast Castle. Originally built in 1870, this castle was commissioned by the third Marquis of Donegall.

- C.S. Lewis was born and bred in Belfast. Lewis is arguably one of the most famous figures to ever come out of Northern Ireland. The author and theologian, whose full name is Clive Staples Lewis, was born in Belfast in 1898 and attended the historic Campbell College for part of his schooling.
- There is a library in Belfast that is more than 200 years old. Established in 1788, the Linen Hall Library is the oldest library in Belfast, coming in at an impressive 232 years old.
- One-third of the population of Northern Ireland lives in Belfast. Northern Ireland is a fairly small country, with around 1.885 million residents, which is significantly lower than the rest of the United Kingdom.
After factories began using machines to spin and weave great quantities of cloth, Belfast became the most important linen-making town in Ireland. It also developed into a major shipbuilding center. The most famous ship built there was the ill-fated Titanic. Belfast and the rest of the island of Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801.
