May 2, 2024 · 2 May 2024, 17:47. By the time Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with its huge ‘Ode to Joy’ climax, was premiered on 7 May 1824, the composer was profoundly deaf. Ludwig van Beethoven ’s revolutionary Ninth Symphony is, without question, one of the greatest works in classical repertoire.
One of his sketchbooks from 1811 shows that Ode to Joy would become a cantata, rather than become integrated within an orchestral work. On the other hand, Beethoven had plans to write a ninth and a tenth symphony.
One of the most distinctive aspects of this symphony is its incorporation of vocal elements in the final movement, something that was unheard of in the symphonic tradition. This choice was influenced by Beethoven’s long-held desire to set Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” to music.
The text of the Symphony’s finale, based upon the 1785 Ode “To Joy” by the great German writer, Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), held a lifelong attraction for the composer. Likewise, Beethoven’s melodic setting of Schiller’s Ode in the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth was the product of an extended genesis.
