By July of 1839, Iowa City had been surveyed and laid out in lots. Lots in the new Capital city sold rapidly. In December of 1841 the seat of Government was moved to Iowa City. Although the Capital Building, itself, was not completed until almost a year later.

In 1904, the Kentucky General Assembly chose Frankfort (rather than Lexington or Louisville) as the location for the state capital and appropriated $1 million for the construction of a permanent state capitol building, to be located in southern Frankfort.
Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846 (the 29th state), and the state continued to attract many settlers, both native and foreign-born. Only the extreme northwestern part of the state remained a frontier area.
HISTORY OF THE CAPITOL. The territory of Iowa was created in 1838 with Robert Lucas, of Ohio as its first governor. He selected Burlington as the capitol. Population was moving westward and the 2nd Legislative Assembly chose to change the Capitol to Iowa City. The old Capitol Building was started and Iowa City became the Capitol in 1841.
