May 7, 2024 · The first European settlements. Captain William Rhodes first visited in 1836. He came back in 1839 and landed a herd of 50 cattle near Akaroa. The first attempt at settling on the plains was made by James Herriot of Sydney. He arrived with two small groups of farmers in April 1840.

Apr 12, 2019 · On a cool, crisp morning in May 1860, before the settlers of Christchurch stirred for the day, Dr Alfred Charles Barker climbed to the roof of the unfinished Canterbury Provincial Government Buildings and began to take photographs.
The History of Christchurch. Christchurch sits between two rivers – the Avon and the Stour – and research indicates it began as an early Saxon settlement. It was originally known as Tweoxneam (Twynham) from Old English meaning between two rivers. The town has two entries in the Domesday Book.

May 7, 2024 · The "Sarah and Elizabeth" on 12 April 1840 landed Messrs Herriott, McGillivray, Ellis, Shaw (and his wife) and McKinnon (with his wife and children) - the first European settlers on the plain. By early 1841 this party had abandoned its attempt to establish a farm near what is now Hagley Park.
