May 3, 2024 · The most common symptoms are pain, discomfort, and bloating in the upper abdomen soon after eating. Indigestion that lasts longer than two weeks, and does not respond to simple treatment, may indicate a more serious condition. Upper abdominal pain that radiates to the jaw, neck, or arm is a medical emergency.
If the pain is sudden, severe or does not ease within 30 minutes, seek emergency medical care. Sudden abdominal pain is often an indicator of serious intra-abdominal disease, such as a perforated ulcer or a ruptured abdominal aneurysm, although it could also result from a benign disease, such as gallstones.
- Appendicitis. Severe abdominal pain around the belly button or in the right lower abdomen. The pain is sensitive to touch. Nausea. Vomiting. Not wanting to eat.
- Pancreatitis. Upper abdominal pain, often with back pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Not wanting to eat. Shortness of breath (rare) Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas.
- Cholecystitis and cholangitis. Constant pain in the upper right abdomen. Fever. May have yellowing of skin or eyes. May have dizziness. May have confusion, altered mental status.
- Diverticulitis. Pain in the left or right lower part of abdomen. Fever. Nausea. Vomiting. Diverticulitis is an inflammation of diverticula, small pouches that can form in the walls of your colon.
