Played out in stark isolation against the barren beauty of the outback, this suffers at times from being too stagey, though it's beautifully played by all involved. As the dead girl on whom the story hinges, Sophie Lowe turns in a haunting performance reminiscent of a Badlands -era Sissy Spacek, seductive and yet clearly just a child.

Permalink. 9/10. Always on their minds. kevin-rennie 14 September 2009. Warning: Spoilers. Director/screenwriter, Rachel Ward has created a very moving experience in Beautiful Kate. It's a story of a dysfunctional bush family, set in the dry but magnificent country around South Australia's Flinders Ranges.
Ned Kendall is asked to return to the remote and isolated family home by his sister, to say goodbye to his father who is dying. Ned also brings his young aspiring actress fiancee who struggles with the isolation. When home he starts having memories of his childhood many involving his beautiful twin sister and his older brother. These memories awaken long-buried secrets from the family's past.
