Glace Bay was incorporated as a town on January 18, 1901. At its high point the company operated eleven mines in all, and was responsible for 40% of Canada's coal production. Coal was transported on the Sydney and Louisburg Railway to both of those ports for shipping.

Sep 24, 2012 · The Dominion Coal Company, founded in 1893, made Glace Bay a boomtown. The municipality emerged from smaller 19th century colliery settlements. Immigrant workers came from Britain and Europe, but most of the population was drawn from rural Cape Breton , the Maritimes and Newfoundland.
When Glace Bay was incorporated in 1901, A. B., as he was known to all, then 43, was named the town’s first Stipendiary Magistrate and dispensed ” common sense justice” for more than 40 years. He died in the 1940’s.

Glace Bay would continue on as a distinct autonomous town for 94 years. In 1995, the government of Nova Scotia sought to reduce the number of independent towns, thus, Glace Bay became incorporated with several other towns within Cape Breton Island to form the new Cape Breton Regional Municipality under the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Act.
