Anzac Day was first commemorated at the Australian War Memorial in 1942, but, due to government orders preventing large public gatherings in case of Japanese air attack, it was a small affair and was neither a march nor a memorial service. Anzac Day has been annually commemorated at the Australian War Memorial ever since.

Mar 1, 2024 · The birth of ANZAC Day ANZAC Day was officially recognised in 1916, only one year after the Gallipoli landing. These first ANZAC Day marches and ceremonies gave the country a chance to collectively mourn the loss of their young men. Marches were also held in London where a newspaper headline referred to the ANZACs as “the knights of Gallipoli”.
25 April 1915: landing at Gallipoli. On 25 April 1915, 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at what is now called Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. Around 2,000 of them were killed or wounded that day.
The day of the landings — 25 April — was declared ‘Anzac Day’ by the federal government in 1916. ‘Australia’s great heart is throbbing today as it has never throbbed before.
