Geography. Lordsburg is in northern Hidalgo County, at the intersection of Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 70. I-10 leads east 60 miles (97 km) to Deming and 120 miles (190 km) to Las Cruces, while to the west it leads 155 miles (249 km) to Tucson, Arizona.
Lordsburg made its name as the stop at the junctions of Hwys 70 and 80, major roads in the state. It was located on the “Broadway of America Highway” and in 1964, Lordsburg boasted 21 motels, 20 cafes, and 31 service stations— the biggest gas-food-and-lodging stop between Arizona and Texas.
Located in New Mexico’s southern Bootheel along the border with Arizona and Mexico, Hidalgo County is an important part of the Old West and the history of America. Once home to Billy the Kid and Native American tribes, today the region is the commercial hub for five separate highways that converge here.

To access the Gila Lower Box Canyon, take U.S. 70 West from Lordsburg 1.5 miles to NM 464. Go North on NM 464 for 14 miles, and turn West on the bladed County Road. Access to the Gila Lower Box Canyon from the County Road requires a 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle and staying on the existing routes.
