On October 1, 2012, I-40 exit 153 to US 64 was permanently closed by the NCDOT due to the redesigning of the I-40/I-77 interchange. In Asheboro, a new US 64 Bypass was planned to go south around the city, with a new connector (an extension of NC 159 Spur) to the North Carolina Zoo.
