Perhaps, as with so many inventions, both Godfrey/Connors and Favilla independently developed similar instruments.
The baritone ukulele was first introduced in the early 1940s by Arthur Godfrey, a popular radio and television personality of that time. Godfrey wanted an instrument with a deeper and richer sound than the traditional soprano ukulele, which was the most popular uke size at the time.
