The Fitzroy Gardens are 26 hectares (64 acres) located on the southeastern edge of the Melbourne central business district in East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The gardens are bounded by Clarendon Street, Albert Street, Lansdowne Street, and Wellington Parade with the Treasury Gardens across Lansdowne street to the west.
Its general design, of a river god on one knee bearing a clam shell basin aloft, was attributed to Hodgkinson and it was executed by the distinguished sculptor Charles Summers. (This was known variously as the Neptune or Old Man Fountain, and remained in the Gardens for nearly a century until it was replaced by the Fountain of the Birds in 1960).
