  4. Apr 24, 2022 · Straw itself would not make a bullet stop. But straw works well to hold up a sand pile, and sand makes a great backstop! Sand does not stay piled up well unless you get a lot and make a wide pile. But two stacks of spoiled hay or straw with a couple feet of sand between them will stop most any bullet.

It took two of the bales end to end to stop an M1 Garand with ball ammo as the bullet completely penetrated the first bale.

Behind was 50 yards of brush down to a dry river bed. All downhill. A 4’x4′ piece of 3/4 inch plywood held targets. The hay bale would stop .45 ACP @7 yards. .222 and .223 rifle rounds as close as 25 yards.
