Feb 20, 2010 · While I have never tried it, I would think five foot round hay bales might slow a bullet down but unless you've got several lined up one behind the other (and even then), I'm not sure they would stop a round. If you've got the bales, set them up with a plywood backing and fire a couple of rounds from your favorite shooter.

  5. May 22, 2011 · Yep they work they stopped 22 rimfire at about 08 to 16 inches penetration in the bales we were using just a couple weeks ago. The shots were from about 40 yards. It took two of the bales end to end to stop an M1 Garand with ball ammo as the bullet completely penetrated the first bale.

  6. Jun 7, 2010 · Posts: 1,066. Rectangular hay bales have folds with interstitial spaces, so shooting at any side might allow a bullet to pass through with hardly any obstruction. Round bales have layers with interstitial spaces; rolled up sort of like a jelly roll, so shooting at a side might not stop a bullet.

  7. Stand behind the bale, let someone shoot into it, then decide how confident you are the hay will stop the bullet.
