Our Story. It all began with a dream: To craft the world’s finest pianos. In 1900, a small company started by Torakusu Yamaha built Japan’s first upright piano. Just two years later, they would create the country’s first grand piano, which would go on to receive an Honorary Grand Prize at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731) of Italy. Cristofori was unsatisfied by the lack of control that musicians had over the volume level of the harpsichord. He is credited for switching out the plucking mechanism with a hammer to create the modern piano in around the year 1700.
