In my garden in Texas near the Gulf, Archduke Charles is an unusually small and tidy shrub for a China. It normally blooms almost all year long and holds its flowers for a long time as they gradually change from pale pink to deep red.

The full, very shapely flowers open with crimson outer petals and neat pink centers, then darken to solid crimson. The heat of the sun speeds the process: what appears to be a bi-color hedge in spring and fall will be all red roses in mid-summer.

The Archduke Charles was the father of the Emperor Franz Joseph, the longest serving ruler in European history. Recent genetic studies have shown that 'Archduke Charles' is genetically identical to 'Old Blush' and must therefore be a sport, not a seedling of this rose.
