Chief Dan George OC (born Geswanouth Slahoot; July 24, 1899 – September 23, 1981) was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, a Coast Salish band whose Indian reserve is located on Burrard Inlet in the southeast area of the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also was an actor, musician, poet and author.

VANCOUVER – Leonard George remembers the first time he heard his father, Chief Dan George, deliver his moving and prophetic speech on Indigenous rights, “A Lament for Confederation.”. It was 1967 and the acclaimed actor and former Tsleil-Waututh chief was set to speak at Canada’s centennial celebration in Vancouver.
On September 23, 1981, Chief Dan George died at the age of 82 in Vancouver. In 1982, a collection of his poetry was released as My Spirit Soars. While George’s health had been declining the previous years, his son said his death came down to the death of his beloved wife a decade prior, saying his father died of a broken heart.
