    • Take a photo at Belvedere. (Upper Belvedere palace, lake and market) This is missed by most people, but an absolute must in my opinion. Which is why I put it at the top of this list.
    • Visit a Christmas market. (The Christmas market on the historical Freyung square) This is why most people visit in the first place. Vienna’s numerous Christmas markets open from mid-November and make you believe the world’s a better place than news broadcasts and social media might suggest.
    • Drink Weihnachtspunsch. (Souvenir punch mugs from Belvedere) A fine idea for the aforementioned steaming mug of something warm is Weihnachtspunsch (Christmas punch): the drink comes in dozens of flavours and keeps the chill at bay on a cold winter’s evening.
    • Listen to an advent concert. (Stephansdom cathedral, which has a Christmas market alongside, also hosts advent concerts) Vienna fills with the sound of Advent concerts in December, including “Strauss and Mozart” performances designed to offer a taste of light classical Viennese music for visitors.

    • Visit the Giant Christmas Bow. Whilst you make your way around the Innere Stadt (1st District) in Vienna there is plenty to see and do and the best way to experience central Vienna is of course on foot so you can take it all in.
    • Visit Demel Bakery. This 1786 tea salon has built a name for itself as one of the finest tea houses in Vienna. They serve specialty cakes, tea, coffee, and a limited cafe style menu.
    • Step Inside the Vienna State Opera House. Still within the Innere Stadt, be sure to make your way to the Vienna State Opera House for a behind the scenes tour – priced at a fair 9€ and available on the hour (check the website for an update of tour times as they vary depending on performances).
