- Heart Disease. Number of deaths: 695,547. Rate: 173.8 per 100,000 population. Heart disease remained the top killer in the U.S. in 2021, accounting for about 20% of deaths even as its toll ticked down year over year by about 1,400 deaths.
- Cancer. Number of deaths: 605,213. Rate: 146.6 per 100,000 population. The total number of cancer deaths in the U.S. increased by 2,863 in 2021, while the cancer death rate ticked up from 144.1 per 100,000 population in 2020.
- COVID-19. Number of deaths: 416,893. Rate: 104.1 per 100,000 population. COVID-19 was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2021, surpassing the fourth-leading cause – unintentional injuries – by more than 190,000 deaths, as well as its 2020 toll by more than 66,000 deaths.
- Accidents/Unintentional Injuries. Number of deaths: 224,935. Rate: 64.7 per 100,000 population. Unintentional injuries resulting from things like drug overdoses, car accidents and falls accounted for 6.5% of U.S. deaths in 2021.
