After the assassination of King Dagobert II of Austrasia in 679, Count Martin ( dux Martinus) and Pepin of Herstal were the leading noblemen of Austrasia and led the resistance against Neustrian mayor Ebroin, who had designs on all of Francia.

    Martin was the Count of Laon. Little is known of this person from primary sources. Various Ancestry.com pedigrees have his birth dating from 622 to 670, possibly in April and his death from 680 to 704, posisble on July 17 in Laon, in modern day north France. He may have been executed.
