The entire season was Dexter attempting (unsuccessfully) to steer him on the right path. Miguel was beyond his control. Miguel was using, manipulating, and lying to Dexter from the moment he found Dexter at Freebo's kill room, all the way to his dying breaths on Dexter's table.
