He had considerable success during the initial years of the war, his drive, determination and experience of European techniques bringing him early victories.

Rupert became a soldier and fought in the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648). This gave him useful military experience when, in 1642, he joined Charles I's army in the English Civil War.

When the English Civil War commenced in 1642, Rupert rallied to his uncle's cause and was appointed General of Horse, answerable only to the King himself. He landed at Newcastle in August 1642 with his younger brother Prince Maurice, and rode to Leicester Abbey where King Charles I had a tiny army.
This fight is known as the Siege of Liverpool. Prince Rupert's set about torching the town and wrecking the castle. They stole much of its gold and treasure. King John's original Liverbird ‘seal’ was lost during the siege. The treasure Rupert stole was buried in tunnels under the Everton district and never seen again.
