The Red Sea is a sea inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. Its connection to the ocean is in the south, through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. To its north lie the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez (leading to the Suez Canal).
At its northern end, the sea branches out; the western branch is known as the Gulf of Suez and the eastern arm as the Gulf of Aqaba. The Red Sea connects the Indian Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean through the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea.

May 17, 2018 · In the northern part of the Red Sea are the Gulf of Elath (Aqaba) and the Gulf of Suez which enclose the Sinai Peninsula. With the opening of the Suez Canal, the Red Sea was connected with the Mediterranean. Its total area is 176,061.6 sq. mi. (456,000 sq. km.) and its length about 1,240 mi. (2,000 km., excluding the gulfs in the north).
Located between Africa and Asia, this majestic body of water is bordered by Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Its name is derived from the red-colored cyanobacteria Trichodesmium erythraeum, which occasionally gives the water a reddish-brown hue. The Red Sea’s geography is as diverse as its marine life.
The gulf is east of the Sinai Peninsula and west of the Arabian Peninsula. With the Gulf of Suez to the west, it extends from the northern portion of the Red Sea. It reaches a maximum depth of 1,850 metres (6,070 ft) in its central area: the Gulf of Suez is significantly wider but less than 100 m (330 ft) deep.
