Ajo ( / ˈɑːhoʊ / AH-hoh) is an unincorporated community in Pima County, Arizona, United States. It is the closest community to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The population was 3,039 at the 2020 census. Ajo is located on State Route 85 just 43 miles (69 km) from the Mexican border .

- Visit the Historic Train Depot (Ajo Visitor Center) Look for the tiled coupola at the far end of the plaza–this once housed Ajo’s train depot. But, in the words of Warren Zevon, “the train don’t run by here no more,” so the depot has been converted to Ajo’s Visitor Center.
- Take a Historic Walking Tour. One of the helpful bits of information you’ll get at the Visitor Center is a handy map of Ajo’s Historic District, pointing out significant buildings and landmarks.

- Stroll The Historic Townsite Plaza. Any visit to Ajo should begin with a walk around the gorgeous Ajo Townsite Historic District. You’re sure to spot the white buildings and towering palm trees as you drive through town on Highway 85.
- Check Out The Heart Of Ajo’s Artist Community. Just a short walk southwest from the Ajo Plaza is the Curley School Artisan Apartment building that houses 30 live/work apartment rentals for artists, artisans, and creative home businesses.
- Walk Down Artists Alley. A short distance southeast of the Ajo Plaza is the cool lane known as Artists Alley. All along the alley, the backs of buildings are adorned with colorful murals depicting various Southwestern U.S., Mexican, and Native American images.
- Take A Break At Oasis Coffee. As you make your way around the plaza, be sure to check out the adorable Oasis Coffee, which is housed in the town’s old movie theater.

Why is AJO called Ajo?
Ajo continued as the quintessential southwestern mining town, with occasional strikes and shutdowns, until 1983. The strike that began in July that year crippled the community with acrimony on both sides. Though the mine struggled on with non-union labor, copper prices plummeted and so did Ajo. Mining stopped in 1985.
