Akron, City (pop., 2020: 190,469), northeastern Ohio, U.S., on the Cuyahoga River. At 1,200 ft (370 m) above sea level, Akron was named for its “high place” (Greek: acros) on the watershed between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Laid out in 1825, the town was assured substantial growth by the completion of two canals (1827, 1840).
