Sir Alexander " Sandy " McCall Smith CBE FRSE (born 24 August 1948) is a Scottish legal scholar and author of fiction. He was raised in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and was formerly Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh.
Alexander McCall Smith was the former chairperson of the British Medical Journal ethics committee until 2002. He is the former vice chairperson of the Human Genetics Commission in UK. He is also a former member of UNESCO’s International Bioethics Committee.

He has written and contributed to more than 100 books including specialist academic titles, short story collections, and a number of immensely popular children’s books. His first book, The White Hippo —a children’s book, was published by Hamish Hamilton in 1980.
