It is named after a volcanic rock, “The Rock” which surfaces over the Cowlitz River. Castle Rock’s historic downtown features a wide variety of shops, antique stores, restaurants, and accommodations. The town’s namesake, a 190-foot-high rock, was a landmark for Cowlitz Indians and Hudson’s Bay Company traders as early as 1832.

Castle Rock Visitor Center. The Castle Rock Visitor Information Center is located at Exit 49 from Interstate 5. The building was completed in 2016 and is run by the Castle Rock Community Development Alliance. Inside are maps and information for Castle Rock, Mount St. Helens, and other nearby attractions.
Castle Rock. A rural trading center for the fine farms in the valley, is set on low flat ground along the east bank of the Cowlitz River. Founded in 1883, it took its name from the huge rocky upthrust south of town long known as Castle Rock. Several times river floods menaced the town, until it inaugurated a successful dike system.
